1) Keyboard:Not all function keys works, the most important ones do like lcd brightness, sound and the disable trackpad one
2) DVD-RW: Works but I have a really bad performance. It could be the same thing that affects my desktop and is a pretty common thing on intel chipset
3) Card Reader: Works with SDHC (High Capacity), tested on microSDHC 4GB (with adapter)
4) W-LAN: Toshiba suggests not needed modifications, for me it worked out of the box

On toshibas bluetooth is switched off by default on boot. It can be switched on by an acpi call that is pretty easy to make in windows ( press a button ) but not in linux , omnibook make things much easier. First you will need some packages to grab the source from svn and to compile it.

$ sudo apt-get install subversion build-essential linux-source linux-headers-generic
Then you can check the svn source and compile
$ cd ~
$ mkdir omnibook
$ cd omnibook
$ svn co https://omnibook.svn.sourceforge.net/svnroot/omnibook/omnibook/trunk
$ cd trunk
$ make
$ sudo make install


The A300 is not directly supported by omnibook module so we have to force it with proper options

$ sudo depmod -a
$ sudo modprobe omnibook ectype=12

after this bluetooth should work, if you want to load the module on boot make a file called omnibook.modprobe in /etc/modprobe.d/ with the following line:
options omnibook ectype=12 userset=1

and then you can finally add “omnibook” in /etc/modules

There’s a bug in Ubuntu that make you unable to receive files ( toshiba side is all working, the bug is in the bluez-utils package) , downgrading is a solution

6) Suspend/Hibernation: I had problem with the xorg drivers. After installing Ati Binary drivers it worked liked a charm , I’m very happy for this.Edit: after waking up from hibernation the bluetooth system is disabled for some reasons. “echo 1>/proc/omnibook/bluetooth” will do the job.

My superkaramba monitor is based on the dual cpu monitor by Loacoon, I changed it a little to show some useful stuff , some of them gentoo specific ( last sync, last emerges, currently emerging….. genlop is a dependency).

I had two big problems, I couldn’t hibernate/suspend and I couldn’t switch to the ttys with Alt+F1 for example.

Starting from the latter I realized that the nvidia-glx package instead of the nvidia-glx-new does the job. Since I don’t know the difference between the two packages and I really don’t care to have the newest nvidia driver I consider this problem fixed.

Now suspend works and not sometimes or just one time like it used in the past, I had to change some config options in /etc/default/acpi-support

Hiberating is still a problem or better waking up from hibernation is a huge deal on my laptop. It does hibernate and it tries to wake up during next boot but when X starts everything freeze. It seems a kernel or xorg problem because I can’t turn on/off the capslock led. Here’s the bug I’ve filled, hopefully someoene will look at it.

Inizio col dire che è stata più lunga del previsto.

Ho una vecchia copia di windows xp sp1 che non ha al suo interno i driver per il controller sata della mia scheda madre (ICH9) e allora ho dovuto scaricarmeli dal sito della Asus. Dopo averlo fatto mi sono ricordato di quel famoso pulsante F6 da premere in fase di installazione di windows per poter caricare driver di terze parti, subito dopo un flash: “Ma serve il floppy??????”. Già…..

E dove lo prendo un dischetto? Ho varie chiavette, da 128 MB a 8GB, ma di dischetti pochi o nulla…ma uno si,che non va. “Ravana ravana” ho trovato in un angolo di una libreria una vecchia confezione di Verbatim con scritto “Gia Formattati!!” Wow

Copiati i driver sul dischetto e riavviato facendo il boot da cd di windows mi trovo schermata nera, solo una piccola scritta “Rilevazione Hardware” in corso e poi nero completo e cd fermo che non legge.Sia il cd? Cambiati 3 cd e stesso problema.

Ho poi scoperto che se l’installer di Microsoft trova sugli harddisk più di una partizione con la flag “bootable” esce senza avvisare lasciandoti li come un pirla con la schermata nera. Ho risolto scollegando gli altri due harddisk in raid (quando ho fatto il raid forse ho creato anche il danno), un altra soluzione con “parted” era di togliere le flag bootable o lasciarne al massimo una.

In compenso però ora mi ha avvisato che cambierà la risoluzione dello schermo….ma vedi di andare a ….

• Media Server: it serves the content on the network
• Media Renderer: it renders the content served by a media server

So I actually needed both on my gentoo linux.

Probably the easiest way to browse content served by upnp servers is djmount , it works as a FUSE file system ( that can be mounted by a normal user) and it looks for all the upnp devices in a network. It works very well even with content provided by Windows Vista (or better from the Media Player that comes with windows vista). You create a directory and simply “djmount it”, in that directory there will be other subdirectories , one for each media server you have in your network.

Easy and working but not that cool, I mean…all this new stuff and , in the end, I still have to browse directories. I’m not using these new things just because I don’t want to plug in an usb cable, I’m not that lazy. So I went searching in various forums another solution.

My first choice as media server was ushare, somehow connected to the geexbox project but it had its limitation, one above all that it doesn’t read tags, so when you copy a music file to another device you must retag it manually. Another problem was the init script that didn’t work that well and I didn’t have time/will to fix it. Mediatomb seems the definitive choice to me, it seems a nice project, it reads metadata and has a built in sqlite backend. (you can use mysql too but i don’t have the server on my box). Mediatomb has a webserver you can connect to and you can add/delete content to your share and chose how to rescan your library , you can chose inotify on that ( if you are using beagle you should already have inotify in your kernel).

When it goes to the Media Renderer it seems that there is not much choice yet, but there is some and in particular there is gmediarenderer from the GNU guys. GmediaRender , as the names says, it’s able to render content served from a MediaServer, it needs gstreamer as a backend for all the codecs (it actually uses gstreamer to render the stream ). If you have gmediarender running you can simply go to your nokia N95 media player , chose a song and in options chose “execute on personal network” ( or something like that) and your computer (not the phone) will sound. You can do the same for videos or pictures.

What about coherence? I have it installed and the rhythmbox plugins actually works , I can see my N95 and browse its contents but you can’t (yet) make rhythmbox work as a MediaRenderer. Coherence is supposed to be a full UPNP solution with its server, renderer and controller but the people who develop it are very good in making Youtube videos but not that good to explain the world “how the hell that damn thing works”.

What is missing? On my nokia I can chose to copy or move stuff to my personal network, I can’t do it and don’t know what part of this upnp mess should provide this feature.

ScheduleWorld Side

After signing up and logging in there are a few things that must be changed in the scheduleworld configuration page.

• General Preferences for: as it says those are just general preferences , they have nothing to do with the syncing procedures,can be left as they are
• GMail Contact Synchronization: would be handy but gmail sucks under this point. Gmail remembers automatically every address you have sent an email to and this means that after a while you will find a lot of guys called “unsubscribe” on your phone contacts, this is the part that sucks.I don’t use this feature.
• Standard SyncML Client Configuration: these are the configuration options we will use on the Nokia, all Nokia N series comes with syncML compliant client and we will use it.
• Funambol SyncML Client Configuration: if the application/device you want to sync doesn’t come with a syncML compliant client there is a possibility that you can install some funambol components to make it work and sync properly with scheduleworld.(for iPod , Windows Mobile, Outlook, theres should be something for BlackBerries too)
• Evolution SyncML Configuration (SyncEvolution): for the evolution office suite ( if you don’t know what it is don’t bother).I use Gnome but I when I’m not home I must use windows,so I prefer crossplatform applications like the ones from Mozilla.

There are other configuration option at the bottom of the boxes (its actually another wider box in pink and purple colors). If you want to sync with google calendar the configuration options with a pink background are the ones that matter the most.(those ones that come after “To manually sync with your specific Google Calendar click ‘Google Sync’ at the top of the day view. “).

• Authorization: most of people should click on “Single User/AuthStub”, if you use google apps for your domain then you should click on “Hosted Domain/Client Login”.After that your browser will fire up a google page that asks you if you want to grant permission to scheduleworld.com, you should answear yes.
• Corresponding Google Calendar Username (email): your google login
• Google Calendar Title:click “Find” and chose the calendar you wish to sync with.
• Other options: the defaults are ok, maybe you want the “Automatically sync with this Google Calendar with every SyncML sync” set to “yes” so that every time you sync with scheduleworld you get synced to google calendar automatically.

Nokia Side

The syncML client by Nokia is called “Syncronization” and it should be under “Utilities” (my N95 is in Italian).Options->NewProfile.

• Profile Name: Anything you want
• Applications:we will sync Contacts and Calendar, click on Contacts: Include:yes ; Database: card ; Direction:both; go back.Click on Calendar: Include:yes ; Database: cal ; Direction:both. Pay attention: Contacts database is “card”, Calendar database is “cal”.
• Connection: these info are on the scheduleworld configuration page in the “Standard SyncML Client Configuration” box. Put the server url in the “host address”, do the same for username and password.

Now go back with your phone to the syncronization page and click on the new created profile to sync your phone to Scheduleworld and to Google Calendar with it.

Thunderbird Side

You can find Scheduleworld extension for thunderbird here, right click save, fireup thunderbird and under Tools->Add-Ons click on install and select the extension, restart thunderbird. Upon restarting a wizard should show up guiding you to the configuration options,as usual you can find these infos on the scheduleworld configuration page.After Username and Password you are asked what contacts you want to sync, Personal Address Book are the contacts you created , Collected Address Book are the contacts you know cause you sent or they ahve sent something to you.Next is the Calendars to Syncronize, put a mark on “Sync” and chose the calendar to sync, keep going and reading till you finish.Now aunder tools->SyncSW to sync.

Tip for Gnome Users

Gnome has a clock applet that if you click on it it shows you a calendar , that calendar is connected to evolution and it will show in glance all your appointments,pretty handy feature. If you don’t want to use evolution there’s a solution here

Anni fa avevamo (io e mio padre) preso dei peperoncini coltivati da alcuni amici in Calabria , fatti essiccare abbiamo piantato i semi in serra all’aperto per poi trapiantarli fuori serra verso maggio/giugno. Questa è stata la base da cui si sono selezionate le piante più forti ovvero quelle che si sono addattate meglio alla differenza di clima. E’ da un po di anni che facciamo questa cosa ed ora abbiamo una pianta che fa peperoncini molto grossi (purtroppo) ma comunque sempre più forti di quei cosini rossi dolci che si trovano nei supermercati trentini. Oltretutto quest’anno vorrei provare a “misurarli”, se non sbaglio un peperoncino mangiabile a crudo ( estremamente piccante ma non doloroso) dovrebbe essere inferiore ai 150/200.000gradi Scoville tanto per fare un confronto lo spray urticante per difesa personale ne fa 5 milioni, io spero di arrivare a mille

Quest’anno ho provato alcuni nuovi “strain” (famiglie) ordinati all’accademia del peperoncino ,in particolare il “Pellegrino” , il “Tondo Calabrese” e LUI, il signor C.Chinense Habanero Rosso. ( il secondo peperoncino più forte al mondo). Questi semi sono da piante calabresi/yukatan non adattate al clima locale e i risultati non sono stati dei milgiori….pessimi per l’habanero.

Smontare l’harddisk

Questa probabilmente è la parte più difficile , sul nx9030 della hp/compaq è bastato togliere due viti dal fondo per poter estrarre l’harddisk dal bay interno.

Alla base dell’harddisk va incastrato l’adattatore facendo attenzione a non piegare i ponticelli

Preparare un floppy per il boot

Serve un floppy per creare un disco di ripristino di Windows 98 per fare il boot…..già….anch’io ero convinto di non dover più sentire quel nome eppure…almeno non serve avere windows98 e si puo prendere il file eseguibile per creare il dischetto da qui

Una volta fatto il dischetto copiateci su anche il contenuto di questo archivio ( prima va decompresso con winrar o winzip) sovrascrivendo i file dove serve.

Preparare l’Harddisk

L’harddisk con l’adattatore va collegato al cavo ide del desktop , per sicurezza e perchè dos è stupido consiglio di scollegare tutti gli altri harddisk. Fatto questo si può fare il boot di dos dal floppy appena creato.
Ora lanciando “fdisk” si puo creare una nuova partizione sull’harddisk, questa procedura cancellerà TUTTI i dati sull’harddisk irreparabilmente.

Il programma avviserà di riavviare il computer (sempre da floppy) per formattare la nuova partizione.Una volta riavviato

a:\format c: /s

Copiare tutti i file del dischetto sull’harddisk , non sovrascrivere.

copy a:\*.* c:\

A questo punto si possono ricollegare gli harddisk sul desktop e riavviare il sistema operativo : vi ritroverete l’harddisk del portatile in gestione risorse . Creare una cartella “mywin” sull’harddisk del portatile e copiateci tutti i file del cd di windows .Ora si puo rimontare l’harddisk sul portatile

Installare Windows

Fare il boot dall’harddisk appena inserito nel portatile e

c:\mywin\i386\winnt.exe

Io sono su gentoo e sono riuscito a far andare il tutto con bluez-utils>=3.16, la guida originale è per ubuntu

Per prima cosa bisogna installare un paio di cose da cvs, in particolare libsbc e plugz da sourceforge. Note: se viene chiesta la password schiacciate invio senza digitare nulla, i comandi sono da utente , sudo significa da superutente,se non si usa sudo allora passate al root con “su” + password, poi “exit” per tornare all’utente.

Ora creiamo un file così da non far uscire con un errore il cvs
touch ~/.cvspass
Ora spostatevi in una cartella comoda in cui l’utente ha diritto di scrittura ,una qualsiasi …

Dato che ho delle cuffie senza microfono userò il driver per alsa a2dp che è a senso unico ( dal computer alle cuffie e non viceversa ).

Per prima cosa bisogna far si che che il computer si possa connettere alle cuffie via bluetooth, la password di default delle cuffie in genere è 0000, quindi basta lanciare questo comando:
passkey-agent --default 0000 e lasciate aperta questa finestra fino alla fine.

Ora (da un altro terminale) dobbiamo collegare il computer alle cuffie ( metterli in pair ) . Con le cuffie della motorola è abbastanza semplice, sulle cuffie ci sono due grossi bottoni con la “M” che a cuffie accesse flashano ogni qualche secondo. Si spengono tenendo premuto finchè non si vedono un paio di flashate. Da spente bisogna tenere premuto il bottone, ad un certo punto ci saranno un paio di flash (l’accensione) e mantenendo premuto il led si illuminerà fisso, quando è così le cuffie sono in “pair mode” ed è quello che ci serve.

• far partire il tutto con meno menate
• fare uno script per cambiare tutte le uscite audio in a2dpd (mplayer, gstreamer,xine)

1. Installare Nokia software Updater ed installare PcSuite dal sito ufficiale Nokia, collegare il telefono con Sim e batteria carica ,testare che sia riconosciuto e fare il backup da PcSuite
2. Andare a questa pagina ed installare Nemesis Server Suite (in fondo , il primo file dopo “Nemesis Service Suite Download”),durante l’installazione scegliere USB Virtual Device
3. Aprire il programma e premere il bottone in alto a destra “Scan for new Devices” dopo un po si riempiranno i campi vuoti, passare a “Phone Info” , cliccare a destra su “read” ,sempre nella parte destra dovrebbero esserci dei campi , uno dei quali intitolato “Product Code” con un numero, cambiare il numero in 0534841,mettere l’apice su Enable e cliccare su Write. Ora come test togliere l’apice da “Enable”, cliccare su Read e controllare se il codice prodotto corrisponde al nuovo numero impostato. Chiudere l’appicazione
4. ( Fatto il Backup???) Lanciare Nokia Software Updater, e seguire i passi.Il telefono verrà “riflashato” in un Nokia generico e non di un particolare fornitore di servizio (Tim, Vodafone ,Tre ).

Dopo l’ultima email intitolata “Metti in onda la tua estate” ho deciso di cancellarmi dalla lista, sia perchè non voglio essere nella lista di un imbecille che mette questi titoli sia perchè ho già alice…

In fondo alla mail c’è una scritta:”Se non vuoi ricevere altre informazioni pubblicitarie clicca qui” e “cliccando qui” vuol dire mandare un email vuota intitolata “Alice newsletter rinuncia” a “newsletter@telecomitalia.it”. Una volta sta cosa la spiegavano, ti dicevano di mandare un email vuota ad un indirizzo, ora danno tutto per scontato e quello che ci rimette è il niubbo che non sa queste cose…e fin qua tutto normale.

Ho fatto quanto detto scritto sopra e dopo qualche minuto mi arriva una risposta dal caro e vecchio amico di noi navigatori : il signor postmaster. Gentilmente mi avvisa (in inglese) che non è possibile recapitare il messaggio, causa “Status 5.2.2″. Nei server di posta Exchange i codici del tipo 5.X.X sono errori permanenti ,in particolare l’errore 5.2.2 significa che la casella di posta del destinatario è piena.

Che cacchio vuol dire?Non dovrebbe essere una cosa automatica e sopratutto vuoi vedere che quelli di Telecom hanno ancora le mail da 10MB? Probabilmente , considerato che le email sono vuote, per riempire una casella gmail o yahoo ci vorrebbero svariate milionate di email, molte di più del numero di clienti Telecom.

Ora potrei contattare Telecom ma probabilmente al 187 mi direbbero che ho un problema coi driver del client di posta , meglio l’Authority perchè questa a casa mia è SPAM .

P.S. E’ una settimana che provo a cancellarmi e se invitassi postmaster su gmail?

even if it says “Audio device:nVidia” you must use the snd-hda-intel module to make it work and actually ubuntu loads it during startup but sound still doens’t come out from speakers or headphones That module supports lots of chipset and sometimes they are not recognized properly and you must tell him what kind of chip you are using.
My “real” sound chip is the ALC660 from realtek and the solution for me was having a look at:

as you can see the default config for those chips is “auto” and thats bad….for me the right one was 3stack-660.

and add as the last line the following:
options snd-hda-intel model=3stack-660

now, just because we mostly all come from windows,reboot.

P.S. ma era un tentativo di sql injection o fai solo finta di essere capace ad usare il computer?

Per il resto ho individuato ( come sempre ) un po di pro e un po di contro.
Fra i pro metterei il guadagno in velocità e la maggior reattività, fra i contro spicca la furba scelta di togliere il backend per xine e di usare solo gstreamer 0.10 con una serie di menate tipo tirare avanti con la rotella o trovarsi il play che diventa “vai avanti a rallentatore”, togliere xine e usare quel cesso di gstreamer per i video è stato un bell’errore.
